San Jose Announces Nation's First Citywide Zero Emission Plan
Municipalities Vision to Save the EnvironmentSan Jose is America's 10th largest city, a city just shy of one million residents, plus a mayor with a vision to save the environment. "We can become a zero-waste city. There are things we can do here that no other city in the country can do because we're the center of innovation," said Mayor Reed. "A Green Vision is a roadmap for San Jose to become the world center of clean tech innovation." The goal is to have the green vision plan working by 2022. Reed's green vision entails initiatives in the three areas of clean tech innovation, sustainability and green mobility. Cleantech Jobs in Solar IndustryAnd as a result of these efforts to go green, Mayor Reed is pushing to create 25,000 cleantech jobs, mostly in the solar industry. Reed believes funding will come from private investors, partnerships and some federal monies. A tough job, but someone has to try."When President Kennedy said 'We're going to the moon', there was a lot of technology that had to be created. That's what we do here in Silicon Valley, we invent things, we innovate, we create," said Mayor Reed.
