Pre-Rinse Kitchen Sprayer

Kitchen faucets are the most heavily used water source in restaurant kitchens and pre-rinse sprayers can save water and money

High-Velocity, high-efficiency dishwashing pre-rinse sprayers are convenient cost savers.

The amount of hot water used to pre-rinse dishes is significant. By replacing old, high volume sprayers with a high-velocity, more efficient model, a typical restaurant can save from $500 to $1,000 annually in water, sewer and energy costs.

Kitchen faucets are the most heavily used water source in restaurant kitchens. A new generation of pre-rinse sprayers is equipped with automatic shut-off valves at the hose head (to supply water only when needed) and designed to provide a powerful spray. While conventional faucets have typical flow rates of 2.5 to 4.0 gallons per minute (gpm), there are now water efficient spray valves that supply from 1.6 to 2.65 gpm at 80 psi. These devices save not only water and associated wastewater treatment expenses, but also the energy used to heat water.

Save Time: average cleaning time with a high-efficiency sprayer is 8% less

The new, high-velocity sprayer uses less hot water - only 1.6 gallons per minute, compared to 2 to 6 gallons per minute with standard valves. A standardized test at the Food Service Technology Center showed the average cleaning time is 8 percent less than for conventional pre-rinse valves. The added velocity helps to do a better job ... and faster!

The California Urban Water Conservation Council has a Pre-Rinse Spray Valves website. Among the resources on the website is a chart, "Spray Valve Utility Savings," that shows potential water, wastewater, and energy savings for restaurants using varying amounts of water. The website also contains performance criteria (see "Valve Specifications") for valves certified for installation under the statewide spray valve replacement program.

Low-Flow Pre-Rinse Spray Valves

A low-flow pre-rinse spray valve is one of the easiest and most cost effective energy saving devices available to the foodservice operator.

In addition to minimizing water consumption, water heating energy and sewer charges are also reduced. The FSTC recommends a pre-rinse spray valve with a flow rate of 1.6 gallons per minute or less

The Federal Government has also issued guidelines for its facilities when purchasing pre-rinse spray valves. These guidelines, published by the Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) can be followed by any facility interested in energy efficiency and conservation.
