Greener Delivery Truck Solutions - with EPA Funding

The EPA National Clean Diesel Campaign matches fleet operators, engine manufacturers, local governments with appropriate technology and resources for dirty trucks, buses and diesel equipment.

Cleaning the Diesel Vehicles on Urban Streets

Green transportation has been an oxymoron until recently...but solutions are getting greener.

Cleaner fuels, filters, better driving practices...all these strategies can reduce the amount of fuel used (and reduction is the greenest strategy of all), the amount of particulates that are spewed into the air, and the amount of traffic that clutters our cityscapes.

National Clean Diesel Programs

Anheuser-Busch is working to improve their local delivery fleet by installing pollution reducing equipment in 15 delivery trucks. Busch also has committed to using biodiesel for its urban fleet, and converting the trucks manufactured between 2002 and 2005, as well as 14 additional trucks, to burn natural gas.

Biodiesel burns much cleaner than standard diesel. Natural gas also produces less particulates...and can improve mileage costs.

If a company can't convert ALL its trucks, it makes common sense to FIRST convert those in the most sensitive areas...such as urban areas where children suffer from asthma due to additional environmental conditions such as wind patterns, density or proximity of housing to heavily traveled roads.

"Pollution from diesel trucks has health implications for everyone, especially asthmatic children," said the EPA’s Alan J. Steinberg. "In partnering with Anheuser-Busch, we are cutting diesel pollution in an area that has a high percentage of kids who suffer from asthma."

Diesel Filters and Filtration Systems WORK!

A $150,000 grant, awarded by EPA on behalf of the Northeast Diesel Collaborative, will equip the 15 trucks, or twenty percent of Busch’s Bronx fleet, with diesel filters and closed crankcase filtration systems.

The diesel multi-stage filters will reduce particulate matter emissions by an estimated 70 to 80 percent. The closed crankcase filtration system eliminates 100 percent of crankcase emissions for medium-duty engines, the EPA says.

Nationwide, heavy duty diesel vehicles contribute 15 percent of the nation’s emissions of smog-causing nitrogen oxides and 22 percent of particulate matter (soot) emissions. In urban areas, the contribution to air pollution can be even greater. An older, dirtier diesel truck or bus can emit almost eight tons of pollution in a year, which amounts to 160 to 240 tons of pollution over the life of an engine.

EPA National Clean Diesel Campaign

To address the need for cleaner diesel vehicles on the road today, EPA created the National Clean Diesel Campaign to match fleet operators, engine manufacturers, local governments with those who can provide the appropriate technology and resources in cleaning up dirty trucks, buses and other diesel powered equipment.

Funding to Reduce Emissions from Heavy-Duty Diesel Engines

For fiscal year 2008, Congress appropriated funds for the first time under the Energy Policy Act (2005) to help reduce emissions from heavy-duty diesel engines. Through the National Clean Diesel Campaign, EPA will award grants to assist its eligible partners in building diesel emission reduction programs across the country that improve air quality and protect public health. For fiscal year 2008, the national amount of funding available is $49.2 million.
