Double Your Efficiency! -- The New Business Mandate

Energy isn't the only "Double Your Efficiency" mandate -- raw materials, investment, economic integrity are also on the list of survival strategies for this economic turning point.

Charlie Rose is one of my favorite TV sources of insight. He asks great leading questions and has the most intriguing variety of guests on TV today. This week (last week of June, 2008) his energy guest was Daniel Yergin, an experienced energy consultant with Cambridge Energy Research Associates.

After a very far-ranging overview of oil policy (or lack thereof), the lack of long term consumer/business interest in efficiency measures, the players in the energy business, the constraints on drilling, use of natural gas as the most viable near term future...he made the declaration that "We doubled energy efficiency in the 70s...and we need to double it again."

With all the news about gas prices escalating, a barrel of oil going to $200...from $10 just 10 years ago...I'm having a lot of conversations about potential solutions.

Yergin's solutions are conservation (double!), investment in long term energy sources and more efficiency (yes, double your efficiency again). He pointed out that the world is starting to criticize America's handling of our own economy. Even Russia and China who we have criticized for decades...are pointing out our shortcomings in handling our economy.

And today's news headlines in Southern California cover shifts in consumer and business purchasing patterns. There will be losers and winners in this change process.

But what is clear is that even the winners will have to improve their efficiency in energy use, water use, raw materials, transportation, telecommuting for employees strapped for cash to pay $1000/month fuel bills...and a lot of creative results.

Our websites (especially are all about solutions. Cost effective solutions. You will find here our best efforts to steer you to ways to save 10% here, 30% there, 50% occasionally...and most of all, to develop new behaviors that will save you the most with the least cost.

Here are a few starter points that will help you focus on the destination of doubling your efficiency.

  • Reduce. There's nothing like cutting out the waste to improve efficiency. Reduce lighting. Reduce travel. Reduce frivolities. Keep what is vital and efficient...and targeted for essential results.

  • Change expectations. Make change a fun challenge for your team. Bring out the creativity in your team -- they have great experience and insights to contribute when called upon. Call...loudly and often. And reward their results with recognition, funds to implement their suggestions...and share the benefits!

  • Think in new ways. "Doing the same thing harder and expecting different results" is the clinical definition of insanity. It's time to embrace change and strengthen some new muscles -- mental as well as physical!

  • Put LIFE first. Not just your life. Not just your family. But the life of your community, your country, the living earth's systems. Think about restoration. Not just minimization.

  • Do something every day. Do little things that increase your integrity and your effectiveness. Choose to do BIG things that take longer to accomplish. Set big, real, realistic goals that people can visualize and work to achieve. Choose the RIGHT things to do, and do them well. And give yourself a well-deserved grin now and then!

  • Track your progress so you know how far you have to go before the goal is in sight. Set your sights on a "lighthouse" and plot your course...then row hard.

...and that's the time-proven way to double your efficiency. And the time-tested way to survive together in community.

You have my respect and trust for a better tomorrow!
