Intercontinental Hotels Group's (IHG) "Green Engage" Could Cut Hotel Energy Bills by $200 Million

Hospitality giant InterContinental Hotels Group has developed a software program that's expected to cut hotel energy use by 25% - or as much as $200 million in electricity costs across the company's 4,000 properties worldwide.

Green Engage is IHG's online system that enables hotel managers to record their energy use data on-site. The program then compares best practices at similar hotels in IHG's worldwide portfolio and provides action items each hotel can take to boost efficiency.

Green Engage is a comprehensive on-line system which gives hotel managers the means to:

  • Measure - their usage of energy and water, waste produced and their carbon emissions. They can then benchmark themselves against other hotels and set demanding, but achievable reduction targets.
  • Manage - the elements of their hotel that most impact the environment. These can range from insulating the hotel's hot water pipes to introducing a recycling programme and switching to organic cleaning materials to appointing one of the employees as a green champion.
  • Report - on progress to date both internally and to guests and corporate clients.

The system, which was developed by IHG, will be rolled out across IHG's seven brands including Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza and InterContinental following final trials in 650 hotels which will start late January 2009. It is expected the system will be offered as an option to all 4,000 hotels across the IHG estate from mid 2009.

"Green Engage is a practical tool designed to help improve environmental performance, reduce costs, and respond to our guests increasing awareness of this issue," says IHG CEO Andy Cosslett.

Travelocity, an online booking agent has launched a directory of green hotels.

Early tests of Green Engage have shown potential energy savings of up to 25%, according to IHG. If adopted by all 4,000 properties under management (the program is currently optional), hotel owners could save as much as $200 million, the company says.

In 2008 IHG launched Innovation Hotel, an online demonstration of how hotels of the future might implement new green technologies. The company says it is using feedback from site visitors to further refine its Green Engage program.
