US Emissions Drop 9 Percent in 2 Years

Lester Brown, president of the Earth Policy Institute, will discuss how U.S. carbon emissions have peaked and how efficiency gains and the switch from fossil fuels to wind, solar, and geothermal energy can reduce future emissions during a teleconference with reporters on Wednesday, October 14th at 11:00 AM Eastern.

Brown will discuss how the transition to clean energy and a more energy-efficient economy promise to lower emissions in the near future. For example:

As motorists turn to public transit and bicycles, cars are being scrapped at a near record rate, shrinking the U.S. car fleet an estimated 4 million, or 2 percent, this year. Coal plants are closing and wind farms are multiplying. Some 22 coal plants are set to close. In 2008, 102 wind farms came online, with 8,400 megawatts of generating capacity. Forty-nine wind farms were completed in the first half of 2009, and 57 more are under construction.

Oil use and imports are both declining. This trend will continue as new fuel economy standards raise the fuel efficiency of new cars 42 percent and light trucks 25 percent by 2016.

The big gains in auto fuel efficiency will come with the shift to plug-in hybrids and all-electric cars, enabling cars to run on wind power at a gasoline equivalent cost of 75¢ a gallon. In addition, the federal government’s recent move to set carbon-cutting goals for itself will also lower emissions. The government is the nation’s largest energy consumer with approximately 500,000 buildings and 600,000 vehicles.

Brown founded the Earth Policy Institute in 2001 to provide a road map for achieving an environmentally sustainable economy. His newly published book, Plan B 4.0: Mobilizing to Save Civilization, offers a bold prescription for global sustainability.
